The invention relates to a method for estimating the longitudinal speed of a motor vehicle from the rotational speed of the wheels, said method comprising the following steps: a first phase (f₁) wherein the longitudinal speed (V_veh) of the vehicle is calculated from measurements of the rotational speeds (?_i) of the wheels, supplied by delivered by sensors, for different driving modes of the vehicle; a second phase (f₂) wherein the reliability of the measurements of the rotational speeds of the wheels in relation to the rotary state thereof is subjected to appreciation; a third phase (f₃) wherein the coherence of the longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle obtained from the longitudinal speed calculated in the first phase with the longitudinal acceleration supplied by an accelerometer is verified; and a fourth phase (f₄) wherein the calculation of the longitudinal speed (V_veh) of the vehicle from rotational speeds of the wheels or the accelerometer is selected.
