Provided is an electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery, which inhibits a transition metal ion in the battery from precipitating on an anode, and thus prevents a microshort, a drop in the voltage of the battery and degradation of the safety and quality of the battery. The electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery comprises: a chelating agent forming a complex with a transition metal ion in the battery while not reacting or coordinating with lithium ions; a non-aqueous solvent; and an electrolyte salt. The complex is not dissolved in the electrolyte. The chelating agent is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of EDTA, NTA, DCTA, DTPA and EGTA. The chelating agent is used in a concentration of 2-200 mM in the electrolyte.
