A refrigerator for controlling chilled air according to a volume of a refrigerating compartment and a control method thereof are provided to control an amount of chilled air discharged to the refrigerating compartment according to volumes and weight of food received in the refrigerating compartment. A refrigerator for controlling chilled air according to a volume of a refrigerating compartment includes at least one or more side volume detecting part(300) mounted to a side surface in the refrigerating compartment for detecting height of food stacked on a shelf in the depth direction of the refrigerating compartment. At least one or more rear volume detecting part(400) is mounted to a rear surface in the refrigerating compartment for detecting height of food in the width direction. A control part calculates a current volume rate of the refrigerating compartment according to the detected heights in the depth and width directions, and outputs cooling control signals for varying an amount of discharging chilled air according to the current volume rate. A cooling cycle supplies chilled air into the refrigerating compartment according to the cooling control signals output from the control part. At least one or more weight detecting part(200) is mounted to the shelf for detecting weight of the food stacked thereon.
