PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of removing deposits on an image reading apparatus for removing deposits such as dust and dirt adhering to its optical system so as to be capable of suppressing deterioration in the image quality and to provide the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: A carriage 10 includes: a hollow air intake path 100 that is connected from a face at a forwarding side of a carriage frame 18 in the subscanning direction to a part around one end side of a mirror 13 in the length direction; and a hollow air exhaust path 110 that is connected from a part around the other end side of the mirror 13 to a face of the carriage frame 18 at its backwarding side. In forwarding the carriage, air compressed in a forwarding side space 70 flows through the air intake path 100 toward the mirror 13 to remove the deposits such as dust and dirt deposited on the mirror 13.
