<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide component recognizing method/device for highly precisely recognizing a chip component without being affected by a suction nozzle. <P>SOLUTION: A first template 30 having a reference point 30a is set in a picked-up image. An image of a second template 31 obtained by rotating an image of the first template by 180° is matched with the picked-up image. A matched intermediate point 9a is obtained between the reference point 30a of the first template and a reference point 31a of the second template, which corresponds to the reference point. Thus, it is detected which part of the component the suction nozzle 3 sucks. A component edge which is not affected by the suction nozzle is selected and the component is recognized. Even if the suction nozzle shines in response to illumination due to wear of the suction nozzle etc. , the component is recognized based on the component edge which is not affected by influence.
