The apparatus has first lock portion (B2) and second lock portion (B3) provided on upper rail (12) or lower rail (11), such that first and second lock portions face each other. A third lock portion (B1) is provided on the other one of the rails, and located between first and second lock portions. A lock mechanism has lock lever (21) detachably fitted into at least one of the first, second and third lock portions. The upper rail has sliding portion formed in longitudinal direction over entire length of upper rail, and lock portion arranged at upper or lower side of sliding portion. The lower rail is provided at the stationary portion of the vehicle floor. The upper rail is provided at the seat of the vehicle, and mounted on the lower rail to move relative to the lower rail. The lock lever is provided for releasably locking the upper rail with the lower rail. Slide supports in the form of ball units are disposed between the upper and lower rails for supporting both the upper and lower rails to slide. The sliding portions, to which the ball units slidably come in contact, are provided at both of the upper and lower rails.
