PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system and a microscope which provide a bright observational environment and are superior in maintainability and are capable of easily coping with various observation methods. SOLUTION: The lighting system includes; a bright field illumination light source 21 and a dark field illumination light source 34 provided correspondingly to observation method; a cube holding member 24 for removably holding a bright field cube 25 corresponding to bright field observation; an observation method switching device 22 which is provided with the cube holding member 24 movably and moves the bright field cube 25 on an illumination optical path n; and a detection plate 31 and a sensor 33 which detect a position of the bright field cube 25 moved by the observation method switching device 22. Lighting of the bright field illumination light source 21 or the dark field illumination light source 34 is controlled on the basis of detection signals from the detection plate 31 and the sensor 33.
