The invention relates to the use of emu oil for producing a pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of xerostomia, in particular xerostomia caused by Sjögren's syndrome and/or radiotherapy. The pharmaceutical preparation adheres to the mucous membranes in the oral and pharyngeal regions. As a result of the significantly reduced trans-epidermal water loss achieved by the emu oil, the xerostomia of the oral and pharyngeal regions is drastically reduced and the agent acts as an oil-based moisture provider. In addition, the emu oil has a significant anti-inflammatory action and anti-viral properties. Compared to other known oral sprays, said oral spray has a significantly longer period of effectiveness. |
