A multiple cylinder engine combustion misfiring detection procedure uses exhaust gas sensors upstream of the catalyser in both separate exhaust paths to determine injection (S14) or ignition (S12) system failure origin using a setting difference for an oxygen residue (S10) controller in affected and unaffected cylinder groups : Independent claims are included for equipment implementing the procedure.
