PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of employing a color sequential display method with a minimum change in image data and to provide a method for controlling the display device. SOLUTION: The display device comprises: a liquid crystal panel; an image data arranging part for separating image data input from the outside and corresponding to one frame in each hue and successively arranging the separated image data in each hue to form a plurality of sub-frames; a data driver for successively applying respective arranged hue-classified image data to the liquid crystal panel for each sub-frame; and a light source part for successively supplying at least two light beams having mutually different hues to the liquid crystal panel in a period of one frame.
