The device has a control device (5), and a set of obstacle sensors. The control device is designed in programming technical and/or circuitry technical manner such that the obstacle sensors are selectively activatable in a trailer mode depending on a bend angle between a towing vehicle (1) and a trailer (2). The obstacle sensors are designed as ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors and/or laser sensors. Each obstacle sensor has a transmitting module for setting up a spatial transmission range, and a receiving module for setting up a spatial reception range. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a surrounding detecting device.
