An apparatus and a method for removing a zipper noise are provided to remove a noise of a zipper shape in the circumference of an edge and a boundary by judging whether the noise corresponds to the edge according to an adjustable threshold value. A Y(Luminance) filter unit(220) adjusts an output of inputted Y component data according to whether an edge is included in horizontal and vertical directions. A C(Chrominance) filter unit(230) outputs an average value of inputted C component data. The Y filter unit(220) includes the first filter, the second filter, the first detecting unit, the second detecting unit, an operating unit, and a control unit. The first filter judges the edge of the horizontal direction of the inputted Y component data. The second filter judges the edge of the vertical direction of the inputted Y component data. The first detecting unit detects an absolute value for the sum of respective elements of the output of the first filter. The second detecting unit detects an absolute value for the sum of respective elements of the output of the second filter. The operating unit obtains the sum of the output of the first and the second detecting units. The control unit outputs Y component data according to the output of the operating unit.
