A wire electric discharge machining apparatus and method for simultaneously machining even stack of works of different material under a condition most suitable for the individual material with an improved straightness precision by preventing two continuous concentrated electric discharges. The wire electric discharge machining apparatus comprises discharge causing control means for causing a pulse discharge by applying at least a preliminary discharge voltage pulse and a main discharge voltage pulse in this order between a wire electrode (1) and a work (3), current measuring means for measuring the discharge current flowing between the electrodes at a plurality of current paths, discharge position detecting means for determining the discharge position from the results of the current measurement, and machining energy regulating means for regulating the machining energy of the main discharge voltage pulse according to the discharge position determined before the application of the main discharge voltage pulse and giving the regulation results to the discharge causing control means to reflect the results.
