MIXED-LAYERED PHYLLOSILICATE AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A novel mixed-layered phyllosilicate useful as an industrial material. The mixed-layered phyllosilicate comprises a combination of: either nonexpendable 2:1 phyllosilicate layers having a layer charge of 0 or nonexpendable 2:1 phyllosilicate layers having a layer charge of 0.6-1 and having potassium ions between layers thereof; and expendable 2:1 phyllosilicate layers having a layer charge of 0.2-0.6 and having exchangeable cations between layers thereof, and has a structure in which the layers have been superposed in a regular order in the direction of superposition (regular mixed-layer structure). This mixed-layered phyllosilicate is obtained by a specific synthesis method. A positively charged organic compound is intercalated into the expandable 2:1 phyllosilicate layers contained in this mixed-layered phyllosilicate to prepare an organic/inorganic composite material. This organic/inorganic composite material is swollen/exfoliated in a polymer, whereby a polymer composite material can be obtained which comprises the polymer and, evenly dispersed therein, particles each composed of several phyllosilicate sheets.
