Electrodes 62a & 62b are respectively embedded in first and second dies 54 & 56. A metal workpiece MW is placed in a cavity 60 defined between the dies 54 & 56 then molten metal is poured through a passage 51 into the cavity 60. The molten metal is solidified into a casting CM which forms a contact region L with the metal workpiece MW. An electric current is supplied between the electrodes 62a & 62b when the poured metal is still molten, semi-solidified or solidified. The current breaks any oxide film present on the surface of the metal workpiece MW, thereby enabling the metal workpiece MW and the casting CM to be joined in the contact region L. The metal workpiece MW may be plastically formed by the dies 54 & 56 when they are closed and before molten metal is poured into the cavity 60. |
