Methods and Systems are disclosed for use in a communication system 200 to selectivelydelay transmitting a second negative acknowledgement (NAK) after an initialNAK has already been sent requesting retransmission of a corrupted packet. Thereceiving entity 210 initiates a NAK prohibit timer 641 associated with a specificNAK 631 which prevents status reports to transmitting entity 220 from includinga retransmission of the specific NAK until the timer expires. Use of the NAK prohibittimer 641 reduces the likelihood of spurious retransmissions from the transmittingentity 220 caused by a second NAK from the receiving entity 210 when the retransmissionprocess has already been initiated.
