USE OF MMP INHIBITORS FOR THE PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITIONS OF CARDIOPROTECTIVE EFFECT

The present invention relates to the use of MMP inhibitors, in particular ilomastat, doxycycline, tetracycline or derivatives thereof as active ingredients in the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions having cardioprotective effect. Said compositions are particularly effective in acute ischemic heart diseases e.g. acute myocardial ischemia, instabil angina and/or procedures of cardiac surgery involving myocardial ischemia, and their cardioprotective effect involves reduction of infarct size and/or hyperlipidemia-induced cardiac dysfunction under both normal and hyperlipidemic conditions.
