A printing device using a background image and a method thereof are provided to set/print the background image without passing a host computer by receiving the background image stored in an external memory or transmitting the background image stored in a memory to the external memory through an interface, merging printing data and the background image, and printing the merged data. The interface part(200) is connected to the external memory. The memory(210) stores the background image. A controller(220) makes the background image of the external memory received through the interface part or makes the background image of the memory transmitted to the external memory through the interface. A printing part(230) performs printing by merging the printing data and the background image. A display part(240) displays the image merging the printing data and the background image. The display part displays the background images stored in the memory or the external memory in a thumbnail type.
