PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reading apparatus which can efficiently read a document in accordance with size of the document by using contact image sensors of existing size and devising their arrangement and a document reading method. SOLUTION: A reading device 40 and a reading device 50 are arranged lengthwise along a main scanning direction so as to partially overlap each other in a sub-scanning direction, and the document is read at a prescribed speed by the reading device 40 and/or the reading device 50 when the width of the document exceeds the length of overlap, and the document is read at a speed higher than the prescribed speed by an overlap part of the reading devices when the width of the document is equal to or shorter than the length of overlap.
