The method involves replacing a water meter by a new water meter (3a) having a dimension less than that of the former water meter, where the dimension is measured along a branching axis between two couplings (4, 6). A solenoid valve (10) is connected in a space between the water meter (3a) and the coupling (6) connected to a water distribution pipe (2). The solenoid valve interrupts the circulation of water towards the pipe (2) in case of detection of water leakage. The couplings (4, 6) are connected to ends of a water inlet pipe (1) and the pipe (2), respectively.
