PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the break of an oscillating mirror in an optical scanner in which the emission of a light beam from a light source and the operation of the oscillating mirror are confirmed by detecting the light beam scanned with the oscillating mirror with such a detecting means as a light detecting sensor. SOLUTION: The optical scanner begins an amplitude adjustment (S5) when the light beam is detected (judged as YES at S4) by the light detecting sensor by the time when a prescribed time interval Tms elapses since the beginning of driving of a deflector. On the other hand, the driving of the oscillating mirror is stopped (S7) when the light beam is not detected (judged as YES at S6) even when the prescribed time interval Tms elapses. Thus, the driving of the oscillating mirror is stopped when a signal is not output from the light detecting sensor despite that the deflector is driven due to the generation of a malfunction of a laser light source or the light detecting sensor.
