A two-dimensional photonic crystal slab apparatus having a waveguiding capability is provided. Noncircular holes are introduced to replace the circular holes in the two-dimensional lattice of the photonic crystal to provide waveguiding capability. High guiding efficiency is achieved over a wide frequency region within the photonic bandgap. <IMAGE>
