The extensible and lockable hollow column for the adjustable supporting of stands or pieces of furniture comprises an inner tube sliding in an outer one, and a spring-loaded bar sliding in the inner tube actuating the locking and extension mechanism. The locking mechanism has outwards spring-loaded (7) radial clamping jaws (5) at the lower end (6a) of the hollow bar (6). This spring is over-ridden by a compression spring (9) thrusting the bar away from the release direction (8) into the clamped position and holding the jaws against the chamfered lower edge (5g) of the inner tube (2). The jaws grip a support bar (4) guided between them and mounted in the outer tube (1). The free end (4a) supports the inner tube in the extended position.
