A method for inputting a character by using motion recognition in a portable terminal is provided to measure the rotating angle of the portable terminal, to divide the direction of the portable terminal into 4 directions, and to convert a mode of the portable terminal into a character input mode preset according to each direction, thereby providing convenience to a user when the user converts the character input mode. A method for inputting a character by using motion recognition in a portable terminal comprises the following steps of: measuring the right and left rotating angle of the portable terminal(304); checking a predetermined direction corresponding to the measured rotating angle; and rotating and outputting display data so as for the display data to be outputted in a forward direction according to the predetermined direction and changing a character input mode(306,308).
