PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-engine printer which can realize a high speed and highly efficient printing operation. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus equipped with a plurality of engine units 2-1 to 2-n comprises a printed paper position detecting apparatus 11 for detecting a position of a printed paper on every engine unit 2-1 to 2-n, and an engine status monitoring apparatus 6 for monitoring the proceeding condition of printing based on the result of detection by the printed paper position detecting apparatus 11.
