The invention relates to a drive device for a motor vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine, an electrical machine which is coupled to the internal combustion engine, a gearbox device by means of which the transmission ratio can be changed without interrupting the tractive effort, and a control device for controlling the electrical machine and for controlling the gearbox device. According to the invention, the control device is formed in such a way that if a braking request is made, the total requested braking torque is at least proportionally provided by the electrical machine, and that when a braking request with a constant total braking torque is present and the transmission ratio is changed when this braking request is applied, the electrical machine is actuated in such a way that the total braking torque, which changes on account of the change in the transmission ratio, is at least partly compensated for, so that a constant total braking torque in accordance with the braking request is maintained.
