The present invention relates to a topical composition for application to th e skin comprising an effective amount of ADP, AMP or oxaloacetic acid, or a combination thereof, with a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The compositions of the invention can be used to increase the energy level of cells, particularly skin cells, and to treat and prevent the symptoms of aging in the skin.
