The photoelectrochemical solar cell comprises photonic sponge structure formed by photosensitive nanoparticulate material. The material consists of nanoparticles of one or more metal oxides selected from the group of oxides of one or more inner transition metals, transition metals and their combinations. The metal oxides of nanoparticles are randomly distributed around micrometric cavities of different sizes.
