PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure good visibility during the rotation and stoppage of reels, avoid increasing the size of the device and permit the patterns to be completely three-dimensional. SOLUTION: A drum unit (variable display device for a game machine) 30 has a reel 31 having a plurality of symbols on the outside periphery and varyingly displays patterns by rotating the reel 31. The drum unit is provided with symbol members 32 bearing symbols in suspension in the outside periphery of the reel 31, and varyingly displays the patterns by rotating the reel 31 while holding the symbol members 32 in suspension, while remaining faced to the surface of the game machine.
