A water purification system is provided to effectively remove sludge or contaminants contained in water without contaminating water of a purification water area by adopting a rotary upflow type filtration method, completely remove sludge or contaminants adsorbed onto filtering device by backwashing water using at least two pumps, and easily perform maintenance and repairing by adopting a checking passage and a checking port. A rotary upflow type water purification system comprises: a first pump(40) for sucking sludge together with water from a lower water area(100); a filtration case(21) in which a filtering layer(22) is formed to filter water and sludge sucked by the first pump, and which has a sludge outlet formed on the bottom thereof; a discharge pipe(35) for supplying the water and sludge sucked by the first pump to a lower part of the filtering layer within the filtration case; discharge device(24) rotatably connected to an end of the discharge pipe to spray water and sludge supplied through the discharge pipe toward the filtering layer; and a passage member which extends from an upper portion of the filtering layer to a lower portion thereof, and in which a checking passage communicating with an internal space of the filtration case is formed, wherein water from which sludge is filtered after ascending the filtering layer is supplied into an upper water area(200).
