A method for providing traffic information and an apparatus for receiving the information are provided to transmit character information on traffic in many languages by using different character sets. A message sequence consisting of continuous message segments is transmitted by wireless. At least one segment of the message segments contains a component having a character string relating to traffic information which is transmitted through the corresponding segment. The component contains information indicating an encoding manner of the character string. The encoding manner information is added in a component transmitting additional information in a character string.
