PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ethylenic resin which is good in heat-sealing properties, tensile stress at break, impact strength at a low temperature, or the like, which is excellent in resistance to blocking in heat, and piercing strength, which generates very little volatile organic compounds or odor by decomposition products after sterilization including exposure to ultraviolet radiation and radiation, which has good resistance to discoloration, low odor properties before and after treatment, and which can be preferably used in a various packing material for food/drink, medicine/medical care, electricity/electron, or the like. SOLUTION: The ethylenic resin for containers and packaging has a melt flow rate of 0.1 to 50 g/10 minutes, a density of 925 to 975 kg/m<SP>3</SP>, and a molecular weight distribution that is exhibited by the ratio of a weight-average molecular weight to a number-average molecular weight of 2 to 10, the extraction rate of hexane of equal to or less than 0.7%, and the concentration of vinyl groups is equal to or less than 5/1,000 carbon atoms in the extracted components.
