PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the security of an ADSL line without disconnecting and reconnecting the ADSL line. SOLUTION: The ADSL modem 2 performs data communication at a transmission speed that satisfies a line condition of the ADSL line 4 and is provided with an error detecting part 15, an ADSL interface part 14 and an error bit control part 16. The error detecting part 15 has a function for detecting an error amount in the ADSL line 4. The ADSL interface part 14 has a function for adjusting the number of bits of each tone of the ADSL line 4. The error bit control part 16 has a function for comparing an error amount detected by the error detecting part 15 with a preset regulation amount and requesting the ADSL interface part 14 to reduce the number of bits of each bit when the error amount becomes equal to or greater than the regulation amount.
