摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of igniting mixed gas by itself at proper timing securely for combustion at satisfactory fuel economy. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine 10 is constituted to divide a combustion chamber 25 into two spaces composed of a high part combustion chamber 25a and a low part combustion chamber 25b being independent from each other when a piston 22 is on a top dead center position side more than a predetermined position. This internal combustion engine drives a protruding member 36 and compresses mixed gas in the high part combustion chamber 25a to give secondary heat energy being different from heat energy brought by compression operation of the piston 22 to the mixed gas. Consequently, temperature of the mixed gas rises abruptly and the mixed gas ignites by itself and starts combustion. As a result, the mixed gas ignites by itself at proper timing securely for combustion even if temperature of the mixed gas fluctuates by merely giving reduced quantity of heat energy when compared with a case where the combustion chamber is not divided.
