A dust collecting unit of a vacuum cleaner is provided to remove foreign matters efficiently, to improve convenience, and to decrease power consumption by controlling rotational force of a motor according to the size of foreign matters collected in a floor. A dust collecting unit(300) includes a filter assembly(310) having plural vent holes in an outer periphery and filtering foreign matters from air, a dust collecting cover(320) formed in an upper part of the filter assembly and selectively attached or detached from the filter assembly, and a dust collecting bin(330) cylindrically formed and opened up to collect foreign matters through a suction guide(334). A foreign matter sensing unit(400) is formed at a side of the suction guide to regulate rotational force of a motor by detecting the size and amount of foreign matters flowing into the suction guide. The foreign matter sensing unit comprises a reflecting plate(410) installed in an inner periphery of the suction guide to selectively reflect light, and a motor control unit(420) for regulating rotational force of the motor by projecting light to the reflecting plate and outputting an electric signal according to reflection of light.
