Synthetic rubber or latex is preserved by incorporating therein a 2-allyl phenol having in the 4-position an alkoxy substituent comprising not more than 12 carbon atoms. Specified phenols are 2-allyl-4-methoxyphenol, 2-allyl-4-ethoxyphenol, 2 - allyl - 4-n - butoxyphenol, and 2 - allyl - 4 - n - dodecyloxyphenol, 2-allyl - 4 - isopropyloxyphenol, and trimethylhexyloxyphenol. The synthetic rubber may be a polymer of butadiene - 1 : 3, isobutene, or 2-chlorobutadiene - 1 : 3, or a copolymer thereof with acrylonitrile, styrene or methyl methacrylate.ALSO:Natural or synthetic rubber or rubber latex is preserved by incorporating therein a 2-alkyl-phenol having in the 4 position an alkoxy substituent comprising not more than 12 carbon atoms. The specified phenols are 2-allyl-4-methoxyphenol, 2-allyl-4-ethoxyphenol, 2 allyl-4n-butoxyphenol, and 2 allyl-4n-dodecyl-oxyphenol, 2-allyl-4-isopropyloxyphenol, and trimethylhexyloxyphenol.
