PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operativity and performance for raised usability for photographing a still image during photographing animation. SOLUTION: During photographing animation, the output image signal of an imaging element 16 is written in an animation buffer of a DRAM20 by way of an A/D converter 18, signal processing part 22, and re-sizing part 32. When recording of the animation is started, a JPEG processing part 24 compresses image data in the motion picture buffer. An animation file of AVI data format is recorded in a recording medium 28. When a release is operated for taking a still image during recording of the animation, the imaging element 16 operates in an exposure mode for still pictures. The still picture data is compressed and recorded in the recording medium 28 through a still picture buffer of the DRAM20. A still picture preference mode for recording the still pictures in preference to the animation or an animation preference mode for recording the animation in preference to the still picture can be selected.
