PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can read an image with a proper color tone when a film is inserted upside down and read to display thumbnails, and has the superior operability of image read processing for the film, and a control method of the image reader. SOLUTION: Image information is read out of the film comprising a plurality of photographic frames and recorded by a recorder. When the film is read as indicated by a user, the image read and recorder control are carried out to make preview read for obtaining the image information of an image to be read; and thumbnails are displayed based upon preview images obtained by the preview read, optimum processing is performed for the preview images based upon the preview images obtained by the preview read, and control is carried out to read the image in an optimum read mode.
