<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology capable of improving operability and convenience for character input by simple constitution. <P>SOLUTION: A character data input system is provided with a recording/reproducing apparatus (10) capable of recording/reproducing program data, a server (50) connected to the recording/reproducing apparatus (10) through a network and capable of transmitting/receiving character data and a terminal apparatus (80) capable of transmitting/receiving e-mails to/from the server (50). When the recording/reproducing apparatus (10) receives a signal concerned with the input of character data, the recording/reproducing apparatus (10) is connected to the server (50), the server (50) transmits an input mail to which a user can input character data to the terminal apparatus (80), the terminal apparatus (80) receiving the input mail inputs prescribed character data to the input mail and transmits a reply mail to the server (50). The server (50) receiving the reply mail stores the character data of the reply mail in a recording medium (52).
