PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of performing high speed and highly precise automatic focusing processing. SOLUTION: A scanning system selection part 34 selects a scanning system of an image. A contrast evaluation value calculation part 26 separates image information into an odd-numbered field and an even-numbered field, calculates contrast evaluation values for every field and combines the two calculated contrast evaluation values when the scanning system is interlace. A contrast evaluation value maximum value judgment part 32 judges maximum in time series change of the contrast evaluation values. A contrast evaluation value maximum Z position calculation part 33 calculates a Z position (focal position) at which contrast of the image information becomes maximum based on a Z position corresponding to the contrast evaluation value judged as maximum.
