PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device using a light valve, which ensures improved contrast of a projected image. SOLUTION: Light from a light source is made incident on a polarization beam splitter and is polarized and split by a polarizing and splitting section. The polarized and split light passes through a wavelength phase plate which is joined to the light-emitting surface of the polarization beam splitter and is made incident on a reflection type light valve. The light reflected and emitted after being modulated by the reflection type light valve is made incident again on the wavelength phase plate and the polarization beam splitter and is polarized and split by the polarizing and splitting section and then detected.
