<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emission element capable of improving display quality by suppressing expansion of an electron beam by realizing an even potential distribution around a gate electrode during the operation of the electron emission element. <P>SOLUTION: This electron emission element comprises a first substrate and a second substrate which are arranged to face each other, a cathode electrode formed on the first substrate, an electron-emitting part formed on the cathode electrode, an insulating layer and the gate electrode which have each opening part exposing the electron emission part and are formed on the cathode electrode, a fluorescent layer formed on the second substrate, and an anode electrode formed on one side of the fluorescent layer.
