The gas fireplace, giving an open flame effect, delivers a gas/air mixture to a number of artificial logs (10,12,14,16) on a base plate (18). At least some of the artificial logs have hollow interiors (10.1,12.1,14.1) for the fuel feeds. They have perforated mantles (10.2,12.2,14.2) of ceramic fibers or other gas-permeable fire-resistant materials for the flames.
