<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly capable of reducing generation of cracks without crushing the cracks already generated in a catalyst layer and can increase adhesive property between the polymer electrolyte membrane and the catalyst layer. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly has a catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer laminated on both faces of a polymer electrolyte membrane, and a water repellent layer is laid between the catalyst layer and the gas diffusion layer, and the catalyst layer is constructed of two kinds of catalyst carrying carbons 30A, 30B having different average particle diameter. The catalyst carrying carbon 30A with larger average particle diameter is provided on the gas diffusion layer side and the catalyst carrying carbon 30B with smaller average particle diameter is provided on the polymer electrolyte membrane side. By using these two kinds of catalyst carrying carbons 30A, 30B having different average particle diameter, the deformation amount at the time of drying of the catalyst slurry become smaller and cracks are hardly generated on the surface of the catalyst layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
