PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of raising possibility of focusing on a main object by properly determining validity/invalidity of a specific area. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device comprising an objective lens including a focusing lens, a focal point detection device for detecting each focusing state of two or more focus areas within a screen, and a focusing means for focusing on the object body by driving a focusing lens based on the focusing states of the detected two or more focus areas, calculates a magnification based on the focal length of the objective lens and a distance up to the object to be focused, and makes a specific area (for example, a lower area) of the focus areas invalid if the magnification is a predetermined threshold or less, but makes the specific area valid if the magnification exceeds the predetermined threshold. When the specific area is invalid, the focusing lens is driven based on the focusing states of the other focus areas excluding the specific area, and when the specific area is valid, the focusing lens is driven based on the focus states of the specific area and the other focus areas.
