<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active optical star coupler capable of more systematically specifying a transmission abnormal part while continuing a system operation when it is difficult to determine the transmission abnormal part. <P>SOLUTION: Transmission ports 14a-14n exchange signals with transmission nodes 12a-12n connected to a local area network and a signal distribution circuit 17 distributes a reception signal from each of the transmission ports 14a-14n to the other transmission ports 14. A transmission circuit 18 detects transmission abnormality based on a reception signal from the signal distribution circuit 17, and an abnormality display section 19 displays the transmission abnormality detected by the transmission circuit 18.
