PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid unexpected braking action by suppressing generation of residual magnetic force of a hysteresis ring at a time of engine stop. SOLUTION: If existence of abnormality such as engine stall is determined in step 12, an ignition switch IGS is turned off and then is turned on again to supply low voltage current not to change valve timing to an electromagnetic coil in step 13, and the IGS is turned on to start engine in step 14. If current engine rotation speed N is determined larger than the threshold value of rotation speed N1 in step 15, electricity carriage to the electromagnetic coil is tentatively turned off in step 16. Consequently, the hysteresis ring is degaussed at this point and cogging torque can be suppressed to a very low level. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
