PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hands-free camera with a wide angle lens for carrying out wide angle photographing without using a viewfinder, wherein a resolution withstanding magnification display is secured for a required photographing object while suppressing an increase in image data amount. SOLUTION: Range finding means 17, 18, 20, and 21 each adopting a phase-difference detection system obtain a distance between an object in a photographing region optically corresponding to each pixel and the wide angle lens by each pixel of an imaging element. A resolution conversion section 13 obtains the number of grouped pixels for smoothing image data of each pixel obtained from the imaging element 12 by means of a moving average by using the correspondence relation between a distance determined by a table of a memory 22 and the number of grouped pixels and carries out smoothing processing under that condition. In the case that the number of grouped pixels in the table is selected smaller for a near distance and greater for a remote distance, the resolution is higher for the near distance and lower for the remote distance.
