PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting fractures of the membrane of a membrane filter which enable continuous detection of fractures of the membrane without stopping the operation of the filter and do not cause false judgement due to the influence of variation of the nature of raw water or operation conditions of the filter. SOLUTION: The method is employed in detecting fractures of the membrane of a membrane filter having a microfiltration or an ultrafiltration membrane composed of a hollow fiber membrane. On the basis of measurements of the temperature of raw water, the pressures on the primary and secondary sides of the membrane, the concentration of particles in raw water, the flow rate of raw water supplied and the concentration of particles in the membrane-treated water without fractures (measurements at locations 2, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 1, 3 and 6), the concentration of particles in the membrane-treated water with the hollow fiber membrane assumed to have at least one fracture is calculated with a calculation circuit section 12 and compared with the observed value of the concentration of particles in the membrane-treated water. When the observed value reaches or exceeds the calculated value, a determination circuit section 13 determines that the hollow fiber membrane breaks at least one location.
