SULFUR OLIGONUCLEOTIDES HAVING ANTIVIRAL ACTIVITIES

Sulfur oligonucleotides having antiviral activities through a sequence-independent mode of action are described, along with their use as therapeutic agents for treating viral infections. The sulfur modification may be at any location in order to confer the necessary chemical properties required for the sequence-independent antiviral activity of oligonucleotides. The sulfur modification is necessary and can be additional to another modification, like a phosphorothioate or phosphorodithioate modification. Also described are methods for treatment of viral infections, cancers caused by oncogene viruses and other diseases whose etiology is viral-based. Such method of treatment comprises the administration of Sulfur oligonucleotides to a human or an animal in an acceptable form alone or in combination with another antiviral compound.
